Inkweed

Phytolacca octandra

The root is used as an Antirheumatic. The plant is used as a poultice on poisonous bites.

Blood Purifier The species is known to contain a type of protein lectin mitogen that can cause serious and wide-ranging blood cell abnormalities (Turner and Szczawinski 1991). The mitogen affects the division of human white blood cells, and induces the proliferation of B and T lymphocytes. The mitogens may also damage the red blood cells, although this remains under further investigation (Fuller and McClintock 1986). It is mostly the rootstock and the seeds that contain the highest concentration of the toxins, although the toxins can be found in small amounts in the stem and leaves.
